{"id":11325,"date":"2023-06-27T16:30:20","date_gmt":"2023-06-27T15:30:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=11325"},"modified":"2023-06-27T16:30:20","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T15:30:20","slug":"ics-celebrates-the-hong-kong-convention-entering-into-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/ics-celebrates-the-hong-kong-convention-entering-into-force\/","title":{"rendered":"ICS celebrates the Hong Kong Convention entering into force"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wrapper full-site layout-2c animated\">\n<div class=\"top-nav fade-in animated1 head_brnews\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"social-icons icon_flat\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/updated-ship-john-1-1024x750-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11327 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/updated-ship-john-1-1024x750-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/updated-ship-john-1-1024x750-1.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/updated-ship-john-1-1024x750-1-300x220.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/updated-ship-john-1-1024x750-1-768x563.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>After 14 years since adoption by the International Maritime Organization the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) has successfully been ratified and will enter into force.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ICS celebrates Bangladesh, one of the principal ship recyclers in the world, and the Liberian Registry, the world\u2019s second largest registry, for ratifying the Hong Kong Convention today, leading the way for safe and sustainable ship recycling practices.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>ICS has championed for the Hong Kong Convention to be ratified since it\u2019s adoption and recognises the importance of today for the safe recycling of ships to human health and safety, and the environment.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>26 June 2023, London: The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) celebrates the leadership shown by both principal ship recycling country Bangladesh and the world\u2019s second largest ship registry, the Liberian Registry, for agreeing to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) today.<\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong Convention aims to ensure that ships when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives, do not pose any unnecessary risk to human health and safety or the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh ratified the Hong Kong Convention just a few weeks ago, on 12 June 2023, and Liberian Registry\u2019s positive commitment today has allowed all the requirements to be met to successfully bring the much-anticipated Convention into force. The Hong Kong Convention enters into force 24 months after ratification by 15 States, representing 40% of the worlds merchant shipping by gross tonnage, with a combined maximum annual ship recycling volume not less than 3% of their combined tonnage.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Convention was adopted on the 15 May 2009 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Chamber of Shipping has been advocating for it to be ratified and to come into force to ensure international safe and sustainable ship recycling processes.<\/p>\n<p>John Stawpert, Senior Manager (Environment and Trade) of the International Chamber of Shipping commented:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is overwhelmingly positive for the shipping and recycling industries, and the environment that the Hong Kong Convention has now entered into force following the most recent confirmation of ratification from Bangladesh and the Liberian Registry, a move that the International Chamber of Shipping have championed for 14 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis marks a sea change for this global industry and confirms that in the near future shipowners will be confident that their vessels will find a safe and environmentally sound destination for recycling.
