Demonstrations of effective in-water cleaning and inspection <\/span>technologies<\/span>\u00a0have been\u00a0<\/span>given\u00a0<\/span>in the Republic of Mauritius, as part of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>TEST Biofouling project<\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>which supports <\/span>countries to manage biofouling<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mitigate the\u00a0<\/span>ecological\u00a0<\/span>risks associated with the transfer of Invasive Aquatic Species (IAS<\/span>).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The Project\u00a0<\/span>focuses on the demonstration of environmentally sound technologies<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>particularly<\/span>\u00a0through pilot projects<\/span>. The Republic of Mauritius <\/span>welcomed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>officials f<\/span>ro<\/span>m Madagascar and Sri Lanka, Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC Africa), a<\/span>s well as the Project\u2019s Coordination Unit<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>hear about the\u00a0<\/span>technologies<\/span>\u00a0they use<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at a meeting (<\/span>4-5 July)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>Port Louis<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Mauri<\/span>ti<\/span>u<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Officials from the Republic of Mauritius <\/span>shared\u00a0<\/span>best practices and\u00a0<\/span>described the development<\/span>\u00a0process for<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>guidance on in-water cleaning, to incorporate recommendations contained in IMO\u2019s <\/span><\/span>Biofouling Guidelines<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Participants met the Deputy Director-General of the Mauritius Ports Authority during a site visit to\u00a0<\/span>Port\u00a0<\/span>Louis<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Here, they saw first-hand the advanced technologies employed within the Port in the management of biofouling.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>visit to the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>Port Louis<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>provided<\/span> an opportunity to hear from scientists about <\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0impact of biofouling on marine ecosystems, and the importance of addressing it through capacity-building activities developed by the TEST Biofouling Project.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

T<\/span>he spread of Invasive Aquatic Species (IAS<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 introduce<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0to new areas<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on ships\u2019 hulls<\/span>, for example<\/span>\u00a0–<\/span>\u00a0is recognized as one of the greatest threats to the ecological and economic well-being of the planet.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mauritius, Sri\u00a0<\/span>Lanka<\/span>\u00a0and Madagascar are all Lead Partner Countries on the TEST Biofouling Project.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The meeting was jointly organized by TEST Biofouling and MTCC Africa. It was hosted by the shipping Division<\/span>\u00a0within the<\/span>\u00a0Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Republic of Mauritius<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
