{"id":11657,"date":"2023-07-21T04:18:09","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T03:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=11657"},"modified":"2023-07-21T04:18:09","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T03:18:09","slug":"tnpa-kick-starts-n-berth-deepening-at-port-of-east-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/tnpa-kick-starts-n-berth-deepening-at-port-of-east-london\/","title":{"rendered":"TNPA KICK-STARTS N-BERTH DEEPENING AT PORT OF EAST LONDON"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1689855303481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11658 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1689855303481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1689855303481.jpg 800w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1689855303481-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/1689855303481-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of plans to accommodate larger, new-generation vessels, reduce delays and increase automotive throughput, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is embarking on a project to deepen and strengthen the N-Berth at the Port of East London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this regard, TNPA is calling on interested parties to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued for the concrete works package of the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Located on the West Quay of the Port of East London\u2019s automotive terminal, the N-Berth length of 300m is sufficient to accommodate modern car carriers, however, the current depth of -8.5 Chart datum (CD) remains a limitation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis project is in line with the port\u2019s growth strategy objectives to refurbish and develop our port infrastructure. As the home to Mercedes Benz South Africa, we are intentional about continuously providing outstanding service and infrastructure that is fit for purpose.\u201d said Sphiwe Mthembu, TNPA Port Manager at the Port of East London.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The West Quay comprises the R-berth, R-extension and N-berth. It has a gravity-quay wall that was built in the early 19th century. In 2005, R-berth and R-extension were refurbished, resulting in a combined berth length of 250m and depth of -10.5m (CD). The concrete works package will address the inconsistency in berth depth and length, to ensure that the three berths along the West Quay are -10.5m (CD) in depth, with a total length of 550m.
