Between sessions of the Assembly, the Council performs the functions of the Assembly, except that of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization has elected the following States to be Members of the Council for the 2024-2025 biennium:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category (a):<\/strong>\u00a010 States with the largest interest in providing international shipping services (listed in alphabetical order):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">China, Greece, Italy, Japan, Liberia, Norway, Panama, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category (b):<\/strong>\u00a010 States with the largest interest in international seaborne trade:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Kingdom of\u00a0the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Category (c):<\/strong>\u00a020 States not elected under (a) or (b) above, which have special interests in maritime transport or navigation and whose election to the Council will ensure the representation of all major geographic areas of the world:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bahamas, Bangladesh, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">IMO Council<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The newly elected Council will meet, following the conclusion of the 33rd Assembly, for its 131st session (on 7 December) and will elect its Chair and Vice-Chair for the next biennium.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">IMO Assembly<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/MediaCentre\/MeetingSummaries\/Pages\/Assembly%2c-33rd-session%2c-27-November-6-December-PREVIEW.aspx\">33rd Assembly<\/a>\u00a0of IMO is meeting in London at IMO Headquarters from 27 November to 6\u00a0December 2023. All 175 Member States and three Associate Members are entitled to attend the Assembly, which is IMO&#8217;s highest governing body. The intergovernmental organizations with which agreements of co-operation have been concluded and international non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO are also invited to attend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Assembly normally meets once every two years in regular session. It is responsible for approving the work programme, voting the budget and determining the financial arrangements of the Organization.
