Senior Maritime and Naval infantry leaders from over 40 countries across four continents have gathered in Accra, Ghana, for the second annual African Maritime Forces Summit (AMFS) and Naval Infantry Leadership Symposium (NILS).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The three-day event, which kicked off on\u00a0Tuesday,\u00a030 April 2024\u00a0on the theme; \u201cCooperation at Sea: Safeguarding African Maritime Security\u201d,\u00a0aims to enhance regional cooperation and address transnational maritime security challenges within African waters.<\/p>\n

The summit brought\u00a0together over 100 delegates from 40 countries\u00a0as well as international\u00a0partners and experts.\u00a0The AMFS and NILS\u00a0focused\u00a0on key\u00a0areas\u00a0such as counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, and maritime domain awareness, as well as capacity building for African naval forces.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his keynote address, applauded the Ghana Navy and the US Naval Forces.<\/p>\n

Africa for their vision in convening the summit,\u00a0and added that Ghana is committed to playing a leading role in promoting maritime security in the region.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0admonished\u00a0the delegates to use the 3-day summit to take decisive actions to combat piracy and transnational crimes\u00a0and\u00a0enhance regional cooperation\u00a0with international partners to share intelligence and best practices.<\/p>\n

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer in\u00a0an earlier address to\u00a0the media, thanked the Government of Ghana and the Ghana Navy for co-hosting the summit, adding that it was truly a reflection of the strong and continuing cooperation. She extolled Ghana for being\u00a0the leader in regional security and an exporter of peace.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Chief of\u00a0the\u00a0Naval Staff, Rear Admiral\u00a0Issah\u00a0Adam\u00a0Yakubu\u00a0in his opening address, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing Africa’s maritime security challenges.\u00a0He thanked the\u00a0United States (US) Naval Forces Africa and the US Marine Corps Forces Africa, for choosing Ghana as a destination for the largest gathering of maritime players.<\/p>\n

Rear Admiral\u00a0Yakubu\u00a0also commended the Government of Ghana for resourcing the Ghana Navy with vessels\u00a0to aid in combating piracy and transnational crimes, such as illegal fishing, oil theft and human trafficking among others.<\/p>\n

The Commander. US Naval Forces Europe and Africa, Admiral Stuart B\u00a0Munsch\u00a0and the Commander, US Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa,\u00a0Major General Robert\u00a0Sofge\u00a0also took turns to address the media and the delegates\u00a0at the summit.<\/p>\n

The Delegates\u00a0engaged\u00a0in high-level discussions and\u00a0panel sessions\u00a0to share best practices and strengthen regional cooperation.<\/p>\n

Present at the opening ceremony were Ministers of State, Chief of the\u00a0Defence\u00a0Staff,\u00a0Service Chiefs,\u00a0Retired Generals, Heads of other security Services and the Diplomatic Community.<\/p>\n

The summit will be climaxed\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday, 2 May\u00a02024.<\/p>\n
