The\u00a0African Maritime Forces Summit\u00a0(AMFS)\u00a0and Naval Infantry Leadership Symposium(NILS)\u00a0came to a close\u00a0on Thursday, 2 May 2024, with a resounding call to action from participating nations to enhance regional cooperation and combat maritime security threats.<\/p>\n

The three-day event,\u00a0co-hosted by the Ghana Navy in partnership with the US Naval Forces Africa, brought\u00a0together senior naval officers and\u00a0experts\u00a0from over 40\u00a0countries\u00a0from four continents, as well as international partners.<\/p>\n

The summit and symposium focused on addressing emerging maritime security challenges, sharing best practices, and building capacity among African navies. Delegates discussed topics such as\u00a0strategies for cooperation and models\u00a0for combined operations, the spectrum of maritime action;\u00a0at sea and in the littorals, assessing maritime security interventions;\u00a0refining global partnerships and countering and prosecuting illicit maritime activity.<\/p>\n

The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul in his farewell address, praised the summit and symposium for its focus on enhancing regional cooperation and capacity building to address Maritime security challenges.<\/p>\n

He commended the Ghana Navy for excellently co-hosting the largest gathering of maritime giants\u00a0and the US Naval and Marine Corps Forces Africa, for choosing Ghana as the destination for the summit.<\/p>\n

In his closing remarks,\u00a0the\u00a0Chief of the Naval Staff,\u00a0Rear Admiral Issah Yakubu said that the summit and symposium have been an avenue for networking, knowledge sharing, regional cooperation and capacity building. He\u00a0emphasized the need for collective action to secure Africa’s oceans. “We\u00a0owe ourselves a duty of care to safeguard the oceans for posterity\u2019s sake, and each country no matter how small can contribute its quota to this agenda,” he said.<\/p>\n

Rear Admiral Yakubu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President of the Republic Nana\u00a0Addo\u00a0Dankwa Akufo-Addo for making time to open the event.\u00a0He also the Commander, US Naval Forces Europe and Africa, Admiral Stuart B Munsch and\u00a0the Commander, US Marine Corps\u00a0Forces Europe and Africa, Major General Robert Sofge and all distinguished guests who travelled far and near for the summit and symposium.<\/p>\n

Admiral Munsch and Major General Sofge jointly\u00a0commended the participants for their engagement and commitment to regional cooperation. “This summit and symposium demonstrate our shared dedication to maritime security and stability in Africa,” he said.<\/p>\n

The US Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Lisa Franchetti in a televised address to the delegates said, the summit and symposium demonstrated the power of collaboration and the importance of\u00a0working together to secure Africa\u2019s oceans<\/p>\n

As the event concluded, participants departed with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to enhance collaboration and information sharing to address the complex maritime security challenges facing the continent.<\/p>\n
