It works towards building a sustainable core of experts on ocean governance on the continent. The course focuses on Africa and emphasises the benefits of harmonising ocean policies to promote a shared, integrated and common approach to ocean management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>TARGET AUDIENCE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The course is intended for mid-career professionals, educators,\u00a0researchers and civil society members that have coastal and marine responsibilities, functions or interests, from\u00a0countries within Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OBJECTIVES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Build a core of well-informed decision-makers in Africa;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Deepen the understanding of the importance of the regional seas and\u00a0their resources in the context of regional politics and sustainable\u00a0development;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Provide insight into the regulatory frameworks for coastal and\u00a0ocean governance, promote harmonization of policies;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Build capacity to maximize the benefits afforded by implementing the\u00a0United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and other conventions;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Promote the role of science and technology in supporting the\u00a0development and implementation of ocean governance systems;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Highlight emerging socio-economic and environmental issues\u00a0and the need for ocean governance to adapt to changing scenarios;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Present regional problems and explore potential solutions;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Provide a forum for exchange of views between managers and\u00a0researchers,<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Promote a better understanding of the science management\u00a0interface in coastal and ocean management;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To catalyse the establishment of an IOI network in the region\u00a0comprising of past and future participants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BASIC COURSE OUTLINE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MODULE 1: OCEANS AND COASTS \u2013OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MODULE 2: THE GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MODULE 3: GOVERNANCE TOOLS<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MODULE 4: GOVERNANCE IN ACTION<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">MODULE 5: CREATING A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT FOR EFFECTIVE GOVERNANCE<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIELD TRIP AND ASSIGNMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There will be field trips during the course to demonstrate\u00a0real examples of some of the governance tools and mechanisms.
