The gambian Minister of Transport and Works, Ebrima Sillah, accompanied by his delegation, recently visited Banjul Shipyard to assess the ongoing renovations of the Kanilai Ferry. The visit aimed to monitor the refurbishment’s progress and address challenges encountered.<\/p>\n

During the inspection, General Manager of Banjul Ship yard, Buba Njie provided detailed insights into the project. Significant structural issues such as extensive rust and weakened iron components were identified, primarily attributed to prolonged exposure to saltwater. Notably, the front section of the ferry was entirely dismantled to assess internal damages.<\/p>\n

Currently, rigorous efforts are underway including the clearance of corroded metal plates, extensive rust removal, reinforcement of weakened structures, and fabrication of new fenders. The shipyard is fully staffed with adequate manpower, including nine skilled welders under the supervision of a foreman, to ensure the project’s efficiency. Operations are in full swing, with continuous work carried out on dual shifts since commencement in May, supplemented by additional contractors and ample stock of required metal plates.<\/p>\n

Minister Sillah emphasized transparency in updating the public on progress and changes to the ferry’s operations. He underscored the importance of engaging Gambian manufacturers, welders, and engineers in the renovation process to bolster local expertise and expedite completion. Further expressed satisfaction with the professionalism demonstrated by the shipyard team and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the safe and timely return of the Kanilai Ferry to service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
