Martin\u202fMunga, Director-General at the Kenya Maritime Authority in his opening remarks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over 55 representatives from Kenyan government\u202fministries,\u202fbusinesses, non-governmental organizations\u202fand academia\u202fgathered to discuss the urgent need to transition away from fossil fuels towards greener shipping and ports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants learned about the latest green shipping technologies\u202fas well as barriers to adopting alternative fuels. They explored\u202fways to achieve\u202fgreater collaboration across the value chain, and steps to ensure\u202fthat regulations support the production and bunkering of zero- or near-zero emission fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">International experts highlighted how Kenya&#8217;s renewable energy resources could be harnessed to support the development of green shipping corridors, benefitting both the country and the wider East African region.\u202fPresentations from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank focused\u202fon financing green hydrogen projects and lessons learned from successful renewable energy projects across the continent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of the workshop, participants visited the Port of Mombasa\u202fto learn\u202fabout its\u202fGreen Port Policy\u202fas well as concrete\u202factions\u202fby\u202fthe Kenya Ports Authority,\u202fincluding the\u202fprovision\u202fof on-shore power for tugs and pilot boats, the development of GHG inventories,\u202fand\u202fgreen procurement measures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>National Action Plan for green shipping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The event laid the foundations for\u202fthe development of Kenya&#8217;s first National Action Plan (NAP) for\u202fmaritime\u202fdecarbonization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A roundtable discussion allowed these key stakeholders to exchange views on Kenya\u2019s vision, policy actions, and potential pilot projects. They addressed the unique challenges facing Kenya\u2019s maritime sector, such as infrastructure gaps, and how targeted support and capacity-building could help overcome them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Michael\u202fMbaru, Deputy Director\u202f-\u202fMarine Environment Protection\u202fat\u202fthe Kenya Maritime Authority,\u202fsaid: &#8220;This collaboration comes at a crucial time for Kenya. The insights and training we\u202fhave received will help us move forward with a clear and ambitious vision for decarbonizing our maritime sector. With the support of our partners, we are better positioned to draft a comprehensive National Action Plan that reflects Kenya\u2019s leadership in the green energy space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Astrid Dispert, GreenVoyage2050 Programme Manager at IMO, highlighted the importance of Kenya&#8217;s role in the global maritime energy transition: &#8220;The maritime industry is at a\u202fkey moment as we seek to drastically reduce\u202fGHG\u202femissions. The shift to\u202fclean\u202ffuels represents one of the most significant opportunities to make real progress. Through Kenya\u2019s leadership and commitment, this\u202fworkshop\u202fnot only opens doors for local innovation but also sets an example for how countries can harness their renewable energy potential to fuel the decarbonization of global shipping.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Youth dialogue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the week, a\u202fyouth\u202fdialogue on green shipping career opportunities was\u202fco-hosted by\u202fthe Kenya Maritime Authority, GreenVoyage2050, the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Africa (MTCC Africa), and\u202fPtXHub.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">More than\u202f75\u202fstudents\u202fexplored\u202fways\u202fhow\u202fto attract young\u202ftalent\u202fto careers in\u202fthe field of\u202fmaritime decarbonization\u202fin Kenya\u202fand discussed\u202fstrategies for increasing diversity in the industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The youth\u202fdialogue\u202fis part of a series\u202fof events the GreenVoyage2050\u202fProgramme is implementing to raise awareness about\u202fcareer\u202fopportunities\u202fin\u202fmaritime sector and\u202fincrease gender diversity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>About\u202fGreenVoyage2050<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">GreenVoyage2050 is a major technical cooperation programme initiated by the IMO to assist developing countries in reducing GHG emissions from shipping, aligning with the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy. Phase I of GreenVoyage2050 (2020-2023) supported partnering countries in developing policy frameworks and pilot projects to reduce GHG emissions from ships. Phase II (2024-2030) continues and expands\u202fthis support, leveraging substantial funding from donors including Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway.<\/p>\n<p>Source :
