{"id":16411,"date":"2024-11-22T09:56:28","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T08:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=16411"},"modified":"2024-11-22T09:56:28","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T08:56:28","slug":"states-work-towards-regional-maritime-security-strategy-for-the-western-indian-ocean-and-gulf-of-aden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/states-work-towards-regional-maritime-security-strategy-for-the-western-indian-ocean-and-gulf-of-aden\/","title":{"rendered":"States work towards regional maritime security strategy for the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"main\">\n<section id=\"main\">\n<div class=\"main-content\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row justify-content-center\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-8 col-xl-7\">\n<article class=\"article\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16412 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/DCoC-copy-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Signatory States of the Djibouti Code of Conduct\/Jeddah Amendment (DCOC\/JA) are working to develop a framework for regional coordination to tackle shared maritime threats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dcoc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DCoC-JA<\/a>\u00a0is a regional initiative to combat piracy, armed robbery against ships and other illicit maritime activities in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A two-week workshop (10 to 21 November), hosted at the Jeddah Academy for Maritime Science and Security Studies in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, brought together representatives of governments, regional maritime centres and partner organizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants worked on developing a unified strategy to address complex maritime threats in the region, recognizing the need to harmonize coordination among regional mechanisms addressing the wide range of maritime security challenges and threats affecting the region. This included work to create national and regional maritime security risk registers as a basis for a coordinated response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Delegates discussed ways to enhance cooperation, communication and coordination among maritime security entities, both nationally and across the region. They developed terms of reference for new DCoC sub-working groups, focused on the following\u00a0specific thematic areas:\u00a0Port and Ship Security; Protection of Vital Coastal Installations; Illegal Unreported &amp; Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, and Maritime Environmental Protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The outcomes of the workshop will be considered by the upcoming High-Level Meeting on the Implementation of the DCoC\/JA, to be held in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania (28 \u2013 30 November 2024). It is anticipated that a final regional maritime security strategy will be presented for adoption at the 2025 High-level Meeting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Workshop participants included representatives from: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Maldives, Oman, Seychelles, Somalia, the United Republic of Tanzania; as well as from the Regional Centre for Operational Co-ordination (RCOC &#8211; Seychelles), Regional Maritime Information Fusion Center (RMIFC-Madagascar), the Information Fusion Centre \u2013 Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), the Indian Navy, the United Kingdom, INTERPORTPOLICE and the International Maritime Organization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This initiative was supported by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
