Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Addressing the conference, IMO Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez said: \u201cAt the heart of our collective work lies the IMO&#8217;s unwavering support for Africa\u2019s maritime ambitions. From advancing the decarbonization of shipping to enhancing maritime safety and addressing the scourge of piracy, our shared agenda demands a united approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Member States resolved to take the following actions in six priority areas, including:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Maritime decarbonization<\/strong>:\u00a0 Actively engage in IMO discussions to ensure measures adopted under the 2023 IMO Strategy for the Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships are just and equitable. Member States that have not yet done so were urged to fast-track the ratification of MARPOL Annex VI and develop national action plans to fully actualize obligations under the treaty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capacity development<\/strong>: Develop a maritime workforce training roadmap to accommodate upcoming technological changes in the maritime sector.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financing sustainable maritime transport<\/strong>: Create a sustainable financing framework for Africa\u2019s maritime sector. This includes producing bankable proposals to be submitted to financial institutions, as well as developing capability to absorb the financing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maritime security and safety<\/strong>: Develop a strategic action plan for enhancing maritime safety and security in the region. Implementing the IMO Model Regulations on Domestic Ferry Safety and share best practices from the African region to support IMO, IMLI and WMU projects on the issue. Implement corrective action plans emanating from IMO audits and seeking assistance from IMO where needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Governance and maritime trade facilitation<\/strong>: Develop action plans to strengthen maritime government and infrastructure development, calling on IMO to assist countries to develop National Maritime Transport Policies.
