{"id":17570,"date":"2025-03-20T01:47:11","date_gmt":"2025-03-20T00:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=17570"},"modified":"2025-03-21T01:52:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T00:52:04","slug":"berg-delivers-the-worlds-first-greenforge-shafts-to-the-maritime-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/berg-delivers-the-worlds-first-greenforge-shafts-to-the-maritime-market\/","title":{"rendered":"BERG delivers the world&#8217;s first GreenForge\u00ae shafts to the maritime market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8a27f00e-4c1e-1c29-d4b1-348c85806030.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17572\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8a27f00e-4c1e-1c29-d4b1-348c85806030.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"802\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8a27f00e-4c1e-1c29-d4b1-348c85806030.png 802w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8a27f00e-4c1e-1c29-d4b1-348c85806030-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8a27f00e-4c1e-1c29-d4b1-348c85806030-768x543.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BERG Propulsion is offering the shipping industry its first opportunity to select propeller shafts made using the climate neutral GreenForge\u00ae production process, in a maritime sector that is highly exposed to anticipated carbon pricing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/59a87d90-dbb1-c449-11f2-410f56be3f9b.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17571 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/59a87d90-dbb1-c449-11f2-410f56be3f9b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>Three Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) ro-ro vessels due in service from 2026 to carry aircraft parts across the Atlantic are already set to take advantage of sustainable wind power, courtesy of their rotor sails, while their hybrid propulsion, power management and control technology is coming from BERG.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, BERG will supply propeller shafts made from recycled scrap steel, using the GreenForge\u00ae production \u2013 a process developed by Bj\u00f6rneborg Steel which draws on renewable electricity sources and makes pioneering use at scale of the fossil-free biogas rDME or bio-propane instead of propane. The process is audited as cutting 95% of the CO2 generated in conventional production, with other measures mitigating the remaining emissions to ensure full climate neutrality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bj\u00f6rneborg Steel indicates that producing the six propeller shafts for LDA using the GreenForge\u00ae process will result in a reduction of 160 tonnes of CO2 compared to the conventional method.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kajsa de Mello, Operations Director, BERG Propulsion said: \u201cBERG is delighted to work with Sweden\u2019s cutting-edge steel industry and pioneer the use of maritime GreenForge\u00ae. We are proud to be the first supplier in the world to offer customers propeller shafts using this process. It is fitting that the first sea-going application should be low emission ships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The world\u2019s first climate neutral propeller shaft for LDA is due delivery from Bj\u00f6rneborg Steel to the BERG plant in H\u00f6n\u00f6, Sweden in March, with five more to arrive before the end of June 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EU&#8217;s &#8216;Clean Industrial Deal&#8217; is expected to help revitalize European industries by including measures to incentivize renewable energy, remove barriers to investing in clean technologies, and offering aid and tax breaks to cut carbon. Penalties are also coming for CO2 emissions in industry that will improve the competitive position of processes such as GreenForge\u00ae. CO2 emission \u2018rights\u2019 are being withdrawn from EU steelmakers, meaning they can switch to climate neutral processes or face penalties and higher production costs. By 2030, Bj\u00f6rneborg Steel projects emission free processes will be cheaper than their legacy counterparts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe sustainability case for carbon neutral steel is compelling and, while it is currently at the premium end of the market, its use will offer marine equipment buyers a route around escalating fossil-based production costs,\u201d said de Mello. \u201cBERG is proud to lead where others will have to follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">H\u00e5kan Dedorsson, CEO, Bj\u00f6rneborg Steel, said \u201cLike other industries, maritime has its share of sustainability leaders and stakeholders open to the innovations needed for the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are ramping up production based on the cutting-edge GreenForge\u00ae process, subject to the availability of biogases and we look forward to helping BERG\u2019s customers make the green choice that will benefit generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Based on demand, Bj\u00f6rneborg aims to shift its full production to the GreenForge\u00ae process in
