In this way, the protocol contributes to EU efforts to increase food security and promote adequate supply of fisheries products to the EU market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the same time, the protocol will foster\u00a0<strong>development of a sustainable fisheries sector in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire<\/strong>. It provides for EU support to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>sustainability of fish stocks, by improving scientific knowledge and administrative capacity for management of fisheries resources in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire;<\/li>\n<li>local fishing communities, creation of jobs and professionalisation of stakeholders in the fisheries sector;<\/li>\n<li>an increased attractiveness of the Port of Abidjan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, with help of the EU sector-specific funding, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire will identify and implement projects to further improve the monitoring, control and surveillance of fisheries, and fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The total\u00a0<strong>EU contribution<\/strong>\u00a0under this new protocol will amount to \u00a0<strong>\u20ac2 967\u00a0million<\/strong>, i.e. \u20ac740,000 per year, of which\u00a0\u20ac435,000 earmarked for support to the sustainable fisheries sector in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire. In addition to the EU contribution, EU shipowners will pay to the C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire administration a licence and capture fee of \u20ac80 per tonne. This fee will increase to \u20ac85 per tonne in the third and fourth year of the protocol\u2019s implementation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The protocol should also lead to\u00a0<strong>better<\/strong><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>labour conditions on board of the fishing vessels.<\/strong><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>To this aim, the protocol includes a mutual commitment to ensure the respect the working conditions established by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finally, the protocol is expected to enhance\u00a0<strong>respect of international obligations<\/strong>, as it explicitly refers to the recommendations and resolutions of the Regional Fisheries Management Organisations and other international agreements and legal instruments applicable to fisheries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Next steps\u202f\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The new protocol will apply provisionally as of\u00a06 June 2025 and will enter into force as soon as the ratification process by both parties has been completed. On the EU side, this implies still the consent of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<a class=\"ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"http:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=uriserv:OJ.L_.2008.048.01.0037.01.ENG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\" aria-label=\"(link is external)\">fisheries partnership agreement<\/a>\u00a0was concluded between the EU and C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire for the initial period starting on 1 July 2007, tacitly renewed every six years.
