Mozambique is strengthening its maritime security by taking steps to further integrate international IMO maritime security instruments into national laws with technical support from the International Maritime Organization.<\/p>\n

A legal review workshop (1-5 September) provided support to staff of the Ministries of Transport and Maritime Affairs Authorities in domesticating IMO instruments related to port security and safety into national laws and regulations. Emphasis was placed on supporting the legislative drafting process for domesticating\u00a0SOLAS Chapter XI-2 and the ISPS Code<\/a>, including control and compliance measures, with reference to\u00a0MSC.1\/Circ. 1525<\/a>\u00a0on the development of national maritime security legislation.<\/p>\n

The ISPS Code provides a framework for a standardized mandatory security regime for international shipping, and for the exchange and evaluation of information between contracting governments, companies, port facilities and ships.<\/p>\n

This workshop was a\u00a0follow up to the\u00a0first legal review workshop<\/a>\u00a0(12-16 June 2023) as part of the EU-funded project on Port Security and Safety of Navigation in Eastern and Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean. Through the project, IMO supports nine participating countries, Mozambique included, in advancing maritime security and safety in line with the aspirations of the 2050 Africa\u2019s Integrated Maritime Strategy.<\/p>\n

The workshop was opened by Mr. Simi\u00e1\u00e1o Munguambe, Executive Administrator,\u00a0\u00a0ITRANSMAR and is being attended by twenty six\u00a0\u00a0(26) participants from various agencies including\u00a0Alf\u00e2ndegas de Mo\u00e7ambique\/Customs,\u00a0\u00a0Attorney General Office (PGR),\u00a0Maritime Transport Institution (ITRANSMAR,\u00a0IP), Escola Superior de Ciencias N\u00e1uticas\/ Nautical School, Ministry of Transport, Minist\u00e9rio da Justi\u00e7a, Assuntos Constitucionais\u00a0\u00a0Religiosos\/\u00a0Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs,\u00a0Instituto Ferro-Portuario de Mo\u00e7ambique (IFEPOM)\/\u00a0Mozambique Railway and Port Institute,\u00a0Marinha de Guerra de Mo\u00e7ambique\/Navy, Tribunal Mar\u00edtimo\/Maritime Court,\u00a0Mozambican Coastal, Lake and Riverine Police (PCLF).<\/p>\n

This initiative is delivered in close collaboration with strategic partners the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), INTERPOL, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).<\/p>\n
