{"id":18737,"date":"2025-09-23T09:19:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:19:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=18737"},"modified":"2025-09-23T09:19:47","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T08:19:47","slug":"imo-welcomes-a-historic-milestone-for-ocean-conservation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/imo-welcomes-a-historic-milestone-for-ocean-conservation\/","title":{"rendered":"IMO welcomes a historic milestone for ocean conservation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_18738\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18738\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18738\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/BBNJpic-1-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerial view of huge humpback whale, Iceland, Europe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">A landmark UN treaty to safeguard marine biodiversity on the high seas has now met the required 60 ratifications for entry into force, clearing the way for it to take effect in January 2026.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The treaty, formally known as the\u202fAgreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction\u202f(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/treaties.un.org\/Pages\/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&amp;mtdsg_no=XXI-10&amp;chapter=21&amp;clang=_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">BBNJ agreement<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">), was adopted by UN Member States in June 2023 after\u202fnearly two decades of negotiations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">The pact \u2013 commonly referred to as the \u201cHigh Seas Treaty\u201d \u2013 covers two-thirds of the world\u2019s ocean area that lies beyond national boundaries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">It establishes legally binding rules to conserve and sustainably use marine biodiversity, share benefits from marine genetic resources more fairly, create protected areas, and strengthen scientific cooperation and capacity building.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">IMO took an active part in the negotiations during the sessions of the BBNJ Conference, to ensure that IMO will play an important role in the implementation of the BBNJ Agreement and that the new instrument will not negatively impact IMO&#8217;s existing mandate and framework.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Many IMO measures actively contribute to the conservation of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, including the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/about\/conventions\/pages\/international-convention-for-the-prevention-of-pollution-from-ships-%28marpol%29.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">MARPOL<\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\">).
