The result is widespread alarm fatigue, disrupted rest\u00a0periods\u00a0and a growing erosion of trust in systems that are intended to protect both crews and assets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The research applied\u00a0recognised industrial best practice, including IEC 62682 and EEMUA 191, to maritime operations for the first time at this scale. It\u00a0found that fewer than half of the vessels studied met the recommended benchmark of fewer than 30\u00a0alarms\u00a0per hour, while on ships with unattended machinery spaces alarms disrupted 63% of rest periods. In some cases, cruise ships experienced up to 2,600\u00a0alarms\u00a0per day, with peak rates reaching 4,691\u00a0alarms in just ten minutes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Crews, overwhelmed by the volume of alerts, are forced to silence alarms without acknowledgement or physically bypass alarm circuits, normalising unsafe practices and eroding trust in critical safety systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>Effective Alarm Management in the Maritime Industry: Insights from 40 million vessel alarms\u00a0builds\u00a0on\u00a0LR\u2019s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/tracking.lr.org\/tracking\/click?d=aHwdv9Wv0N5mw5ZLb4OTjxaDguUijzOhbW5muIepCS7NLEQZh8ykbPqjexqPgM7CrzWLQg-dBy02GSAwHnMjBu-P8p_k7IUqLEl8bpx69InItJGHComGZBxr33IUOCVfZOscnpf-ynNkIDKFnT0cEUaLE3bjYlpU-ggsJ4MHnrNhuUHNrLxSwKhVaXPN0YvDow2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/tracking.lr.org\/tracking\/click?d%3DaHwdv9Wv0N5mw5ZLb4OTjxaDguUijzOhbW5muIepCS7NLEQZh8ykbPqjexqPgM7CrzWLQg-dBy02GSAwHnMjBu-P8p_k7IUqLEl8bpx69InItJGHComGZBxr33IUOCVfZOscnpf-ynNkIDKFnT0cEUaLE3bjYlpU-ggsJ4MHnrNhuUHNrLxSwKhVaXPN0YvDow2&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1768997561522000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1g27HHSun9ymKORTdgVH-O\">Effectiv<wbr \/>e\u00a0Alarm\u00a0Management in\u00a0the\u00a0Maritime\u00a0Industry\u00a0<wbr \/>report<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(released in September 2024)\u00a0by moving beyond diagnosis to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0what can be achieved in practice.\u00a0A pilot project on an operational cruise ship\u00a0reduced\u00a0total\u00a0alarm\u00a0<wbr \/>numbers by almost 50 per cent over\u00a0a\u00a0six-month\u00a0period, without\u00a0new technology\u00a0or major system redesign. Improvements were delivered through traditional marine engineering interventions, including correcting valve installations, replacing faulty\u00a0sensors\u00a0and tuning existing systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>LR\u2019s analysis also\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0that addressing the 10 most frequent alarms could\u00a0reduce\u00a0overall loads\u00a0by\u00a0nearly 40\u00a0per cent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The report calls for greater adoption of objective alarm performance assessment, stronger consideration of\u00a0human factors in system design and operation\u00a0throughout the vessel lifecycle, and regulatory frameworks that support consistent, enforceable standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><strong>Duncan Duffy, LR\u2019s Global Head of Technology, said:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cOur\u00a0research\u00a0found\u00a0that alarm systems, when poorly managed, have themselves become a safety risk. Without decisive industry action, alarm fatigue will continue to undermine situational awareness and increase the likelihood of serious incidents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>\u201cIf the\u00a0maritime\u00a0industry is serious about safety, it must\u00a0commit to continuous performance measurement, objective evaluation, and a human-centred approach to alarm system design.
