The European Union has officially handed over two high speed Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) and cutting edge forensic equipment to the Liberia Coast Guard (LCG), marking a major step forward in strengthening maritime security.<\/p>\n

Built by Narwhal Boats SL, these 9 metre vessels capable of 54 knots and a 200 nautical mile range are equipped with advanced navigation, communication and surveillance systems. They\u2019ll support critical missions, from search and rescue to fisheries protection and counter narcotics operations, while the forensic kits will aid in gathering evidence for maritime crime prosecutions.<\/p>\n

This donation is part of the EU\u2019s SWAIMS programme, reinforcing cooperation between Liberia and the EU to combat illegal activities in the Gulf of Guinea. The boats will also enable joint operations with agencies tackling piracy, illegal fishing and trafficking.<\/p>\n

Later this year, the LCG will join a regional maritime exercise led by the Portuguese Navy, working alongside neighbours like Sierra Leone and C\u00f4te d’Ivoire both recipients of similar EU support to enhance collective security.<\/p>\n

A secure maritime domain protects fisheries, coastal communities and natural resources, while upholding the rule of law key for Liberia\u2019s sustainable development. The EU extends gratitude to Instituto Cam\u00f5es and the Portuguese Navy for their pivotal role in training LCG personnel and delivering this initiative. Since 2022, 32 officers have undergone specialised training in boarding techniques, pollution control and fisheries inspections, ensuring these new assets are used effectively.<\/p>\n
