Working together to evacuate 11,000 seafarers stranded in the Persian Gulf.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Heightened geopolitical tensions, including the evolving situations in the Strait of Hormuz, the Black Sea and the Sea of Asov, and the Red Sea region, have highlighted the increasing complexity and risk seafarers endure every day.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Day of the Seafarer<\/a>,\u00a0observed internationally each year on 25 June,\u00a0provides an opportunity to recognise the essential role of seafarers in global trade and the risks they bear in sustaining it.<\/p>\n

This year, IMO is highlighting the challenges faced by mariners who navigate through regions affected by conflict and insecurity. This includes\u00a0the risks they take as well as\u00a0the resilience they\u202fdemonstrate\u202fin keeping world trade moving under difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n

Under the theme\u202f”Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks<\/strong>“, the\u00a0#DayOfTheSeafarer<\/strong>\u00a0campaign serves as a reminder that seafarers must never become collateral victims of\u00a0geopolitical conflicts.<\/p>\n

Putting seafarers first<\/h4>\n

IMO Secretary-General\u202fArsenio Dominguez underscored his appreciation for the 1.8 million men and women who work at sea. In a\u00a0video message<\/a>, he said:<\/p>\n

\n

“To all seafarers: thank you. Your work is essential to the functioning of the global economy and the daily lives of people around the world. While it may not always seem visible, your safety, security and welfare remain our highest priority.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He invited the\u00a0global maritime community and all online audiences to join IMO’s campaign to\u00a0spotlight the unseen contribution of seafarers, while acknowledging the risks, sacrifices and personal challenges that are part of the life at sea.<\/p>\n

In his own\u00a0message<\/a>, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cWhen nations clash, seafarers are often caught in the crossfire. Recent events in the Strait of Hormuz have seen tens of thousands of seafarers stranded as they work far from home to keep the world fuelled and fed\u2026 Mariners must never be the victims or pawns of geopolitical conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

IMO is currently working alongside Member States and industry to evacuate seafarers and ships stuck in the Persian Gulf, following attacks on shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
