On Saturday, 20 June 2026, Nigeria participated in the global observance of the 2026 World Hydrography Day (WHD). The event was hosted by the National Hydrographic Agency at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, under the theme “Transforming How Ocean Data Is Shared.” The ceremony brought together multiple hydrographic stakeholders from the maritime and defense sectors, both within Nigeria and internationally, to reflect on the significance and impact of hydrography in human endeavors, as well as to discuss emerging challenges facing the field.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour and Minister of State for Defence\u2014Dr. Muhammed Bello Matawalle, represented by the Director of Navy Affairs at the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Joel Adeoye Christopher\u2014emphasized the importance of hydrography to national development, maritime security, and economic prosperity. The event was also attended by heads of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, former naval hydrographers, maritime industry leaders, and academic representatives.<\/p>\n

Key highlights included guided tours of exhibition booths, scholarly presentations, and the recognition of distinguished individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of hydrography in Nigeria. Notably, Vice Admiral Awal Zubairu Gambo (Retired), the 21st Indigenous Chief of the Naval Staff, was honored with a lifetime achievement award for his extraordinary leadership and enduring contributions to the establishment of the National Hydrographic Agency.<\/p>\n

The gathering underscored the vital role of hydrography in ensuring safe navigation, safeguarding the marine environment, and promoting national development. The National Hydrographic Agency expresses its sincere appreciation to all who attended and contributed to making the 2026 World Hydrography Day a notable success.<\/p>\n
