A new radiation detection system, provided by the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration, represents a landmark step in U.S.\u2013Tunisian cooperation to protect borders from the threat of nuclear and radiological weapons.<\/em><\/p>\n

On June 24 2026, U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia Bill Bazzi marked the commissioning of a first-of-its-kind, next-generation radiation detection system at the Port of Rades in the presence of Customs Director-General Mohamed Hedi Safer, National Center of Nuclear Sciences and Technologies Director General Haitham Sghaier, and Port of Rades Director Karim Nouira.<\/p>\n

The commissioning underscores the strong and enduring partnership between the United States and the Republic of Tunisia to enhance global security and protect both nations from the threat of weapons of mass destruction. The cutting-edge American technology provides Tunisian authorities with the speed and precision necessary to detect and investigate the unauthorized movement of radioactive and nuclear material, protecting trade, commerce, and the national security interests of both countries. The system was provided and installed by the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s National Nuclear Security Administration\u2019s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence, in close partnership with Tunisia\u2019s National Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies, which provided crucial expertise and technical support.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Bazzi remarked, \u201cToday\u2019s ceremony does not just signify a transfer of equipment, but a tangible expression of our nations\u2019 shared commitment to the counter-nuclear-smuggling mission. The threat posed by nuclear and radioactive materials cannot be faced alone\u2014this collaboration bridges the distance between our borders and our shared goal of global safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
