Adm. George Wikoff, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, met July 21 with Rear Adm. Abdou Sene, chief of staff of the Senegalese Navy, during the African Maritime Forces Summit (AMFS) to discuss maritime domain awareness, emerging technologies and opportunities to strengthen regional maritime security through innovation and partnership.<\/p>\n

Senegal has participated in all four African Maritime Forces Summits and continues to play a leading role in promoting maritime security in West Africa. Building on recent operational engagements that demonstrated the strength of the U.S.-Senegal maritime partnership, the leaders exchanged perspectives on strengthening awareness of the maritime environment, countering illicit maritime activity and advancing regional cooperation to support security in the Gulf of Guinea and along the West African coast.<\/p>\n

The leaders also discussed the growing role of emerging technologies in improving maritime domain awareness, including the use of space-based capabilities, data integration and information sharing to support maritime decision-making and regional coordination. The conversation reflected a shared commitment to leveraging innovation to strengthen operational effectiveness while supporting African-led maritime security.<\/p>\n

“The strongest maritime partnerships are built on mutual trust, shared values and a commitment to addressing common challenges,” said Wikoff. “Senegal continues to demonstrate forward-looking leadership in maritime security, and together we are strengthening cooperation that benefits the region.”<\/p>\n

The discussion also highlighted the importance of sustained professional engagement and exchanging ideas that advance regional maritime awareness and interoperability. Through forums like the African Maritime Forces Summit, maritime leaders can identify practical opportunities to strengthen cooperation while reinforcing the professional relationships that underpin long-term regional security.<\/p>\n

“The African Maritime Forces Summit brings together leaders who are shaping the future of maritime security across Africa,” Wikoff said. “By sharing operational experience and exploring new approaches together, we strengthen the partnerships that contribute to a more secure, stable and prosperous maritime environment.”<\/p>\n

Co-hosted by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, and U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa, the African Maritime Forces Summit brought together representatives from more than 40 African and partner nations under the theme, “Innovation and Partnership to Strengthen Maritime Security.”<\/p>\n
