{"id":22035,"date":"2026-08-24T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T07:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=22035"},"modified":"2026-08-25T23:08:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T22:08:28","slug":"nigeria-akutah-tasks-npera-staff-on-new-regulatory-mandate-says-agency-key-to-1tn-economy-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/nigeria-akutah-tasks-npera-staff-on-new-regulatory-mandate-says-agency-key-to-1tn-economy-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria &#8211; Akutah Tasks NPERA Staff on New Regulatory Mandate, Says Agency Key to $1tn Economy Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/782829901_1467210522108698_3186243519136343341_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22036 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/782829901_1467210522108698_3186243519136343341_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"367\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/782829901_1467210522108698_3186243519136343341_n.jpg 567w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/782829901_1467210522108698_3186243519136343341_n-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Director General\/CEO of the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency, (NPERA), Dr. Akutah Pius, MON, has urged staff to embrace the culture of commitment, and professionalism as the Agency commences operations under its new statutory mandate as Nigeria\u2019s ports economic regulator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking at a town hall meeting with staff at the Agency\u2019s headquarters in Lagos, Dr. Akutah said the transition from the Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council to NPERA demands a shift in both work culture and operational mindsets to deliver effective economic regulation across the nation\u2019s ports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The meeting marked one of Management&#8217;s first major engagements with employees following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu\u2019s assent to the NPERA Act, 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Akutah described the legislation as a milestone for Nigeria\u2019s maritime sector, saying it strengthened the Agency\u2019s powers to curb unethical practices, improve port efficiency and enhance the country\u2019s competitiveness in regional and global trade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe NPERA Act has strengthened our regulatory powers to institute effective regulation at the ports. With this mandate, we are positioned to drive efficiency, transparency and competitiveness in the port sector\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that the Agency\u2019s expanded responsibilities would contribute significantly to the Federal Government\u2019s ambition of building a $ 1 trillion economy by creating a more predictable and efficient, business-friendly port environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The DG commended President Tinubu for signing the bill into law, describing the Act as the long-awaited legal framework needed to reposition the Agency as a full-fledged economic regulator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, for providing leadership and fostering stakeholder consensus that facilitated the passage of the legislation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Akutah also expressed appreciation to the National Assembly for enacting the law..<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The DG assured stakeholders that NPERA would work closely with sister agencies, particularly the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), to deepen reforms and improve service delivery across the maritime sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stressed that the new law does not create institutional rivalry but clearly defines NPERA\u2019s role as the economic regulator of port activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNPERA is to promote a healthy sector that will grow the economy of Nigeria,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NPERA Act establishes the former Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council as a statutory economic regulator with a broader mandate to regulate tariffs and charges, enforce service standards, promote fair competition, facilitate trade, and resolve commercial disputes within Nigeria\u2019s ports industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Source :
