IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u202funequivocally\u202fcondemn\u202fthe latest reported attacks on\u202finternational shipping\u202fin the Red Sea area.\u202fThese\u202fattacks\u202fare\u202findefensible. They\u202fendanger\u202fthe\u202flives of\u202fseafarers,\u202fwhile\u202fthreatening\u202fthe security of international shipping,\u202fthe marine\u202fenvironment\u202fand\u202fthe stability of global supply chains.\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Seafarers are civilians performing essential work that sustains economies and communities worldwide.\u202fShip operators must\u202fthoroughly\u202fassess risks\u202fbefore\u202ftransiting the\u202fregion.\u202fSeafarers\u202fmust never be placed in harm\u2019s way or targeted in situations of conflict or instability.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u00a0also renew my call for the immediate and unconditional release of all seafarers who continue to be held captive following piracy attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden region.\u00a0Ensuring their safety is a fundamental obligation under international law and a shared responsibility of the global community.\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The Red Sea is a critical maritime corridor for international trade. Continued attacks on shipping in this region risk escalating tensions,\u202ffurther\u202fdisrupting\u202fcommercial routes and undermining the principle of freedom of navigation.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

De-escalation is the only solution.\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I am equally concerned about the\u202fpotential\u202fpollution\u202ffrom these\u202freported incidents in the Red Sea and\u202fprevious\u202fincidents in the Strait of Hormuz area.\u202f\u202fIMO will continue to\u202fmonitor\u202fthe situation and\u202fstands ready to\u202fassist\u202fas necessary.\u201d\u202f\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
