Maritime officials from six West and Central African countries are taking part in a regional training course in Accra, Ghana (24\u201328 August) to strengthen the assessment, examination and certification of seafarers.<\/p>\n

The training, based on IMO Model Course 3.12, is helping maritime administrations, training institutions and examination authorities implement effective assessment systems, in line with the\u00a0STCW Convention<\/a>\u00a0and Code (regulations I\/6, I\/8 and VIII\/2).<\/p>\n

Participants aim to enhance their knowledge of modern assessment methods, quality assurance techniques and the use of simulators to evaluate seafarers\u2019 competence, to ensure certification is valid and transparent.<\/p>\n

The course also covers gender-sensitive teaching and learning practices to support more inclusive maritime education and training.<\/p>\n

The workshop brings together 25 participants, including five women, from Cabo Verde, the Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Bringing together officials responsible for maritime administration, training and examinations allows the issue to be addressed from different perspectives.<\/p>\n

The training will help participating countries address findings identified through the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (IMSAS<\/a>), including:<\/p>\n
