The Gambia participated in the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control, held in Libreville, Gabon, on 21 September 2026.<\/p>\n

The Honourable Minister for Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, in his capacity as Chairman of the Abuja MoU, was represented by the Director General of the Gambia Maritime Administration, Counsel Olimatou Danso Malang, who delivered the Minister\u2019s opening statement at the Conference.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the theme, \u201cFrom Policy to Practice: Building a Resilient and Future Ready Port State Control Regime,\u201d the statement called for stronger regional cooperation, harmonised inspections, improved enforcement and greater investment in the capacity of Port State Control Officers across West and Central Africa.<\/p>\n

The statement also highlighted the importance of digitalisation and information sharing in identifying high risk vessels and strengthening risk based inspections, while calling on maritime administrations to prepare for emerging issues including alternative fuels, automation, cybersecurity and evolving maritime security challenges.<\/p>\n

It further reaffirmed The Gambia\u2019s commitment to working with Member States and regional and international partners towards safer shipping, improved protection of seafarers and the marine environment, and the progressive elimination of substandard shipping from African waters.<\/p>\n
