The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command (WNC), Commodore Stephen\u00a0Billins\u00a0Nyam, has met with officials of the Fisheries Commission to brief them on fishing gears intercepted by the Ghana Navy for allegedly being used in contravention of the country\u2019s fisheries regulations.<\/p>\n

The meeting, held on Tuesday 22 September 2026, formed part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between the Ghana Navy and the Fisheries Commission in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated\u00a0(IUU)\u00a0fishing activities within Ghana\u2019s maritime domain.<\/p>\n

The intercepted fishing gears were recovered during a naval operation conducted in the waters between Winneba and\u00a0Apam. The gears were suspected to have been used in fishing practices contrary to provisions of the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968), particularly Section 11.<\/p>\n

Briefing the Fisheries Commission, the FOC WNC explained the circumstances surrounding the interception and presented the recovered gears for the Commission’s assessment and further action in accordance with the relevant fisheries laws and regulations.<\/p>\n

Commodore Nyam cautioned fisherfolk against engaging in fishing practices that violated\u00a0the fisheries regulations,\u00a0and\u00a0stressed\u00a0the need for all persons operating within the country’s maritime space to comply with the law.<\/p>\n

He further cautioned the general public against supporting, facilitating,\u00a0or engaging in activities that undermined\u00a0efforts to protect Ghana’s marine resources. He urged fisherfolk and other stakeholders in the fishing industry to\u00a0familiarise\u00a0themselves with the applicable fisheries regulations and ensure that their operations remained within the law.<\/p>\n

The FOC reiterated the Ghana Navy’s commitment to supporting the Fisheries Commission and other relevant stakeholders in protecting Ghana’s marine resources and ensuring compliance with fisheries laws.<\/p>\n
