{"id":22470,"date":"2026-09-24T11:54:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-24T10:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=22470"},"modified":"2026-09-24T11:54:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T10:54:14","slug":"nigeria-us-shipping-maersk-msc-pil-shipping-others-welcome-removal-of-condition-of-entry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/nigeria-us-shipping-maersk-msc-pil-shipping-others-welcome-removal-of-condition-of-entry\/","title":{"rendered":"NIGERIA, US SHIPPING: MAERSK, MSC, PIL SHIPPING, OTHERS WELCOME REMOVAL OF CONDITION OF ENTRY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/transporteur-nigeria.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22471\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/transporteur-nigeria.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/transporteur-nigeria.png 940w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/transporteur-nigeria-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/transporteur-nigeria-768x644.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Some International Shipping Lines operating in the Nigerian maritime environment have applauded the decision of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to lift the 12-year Condition of Entry imposed on vessels originating from Nigerian ports and destined for the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">These shipping companies variously described the removal of the restriction as proof of the improved security situation in the Nigerian maritime environment capable of stimulating more businesses between Nigeria and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Reacting to the development, one of the world\u2019s largest shipping companies, Maersk noted that the removal of the Condition of Entry on Nigeria by the United States Coast Guard would further strengthen Nigeria\u2019s position in global shipping trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Terminal Planning Lead -WAF, Srijesh Subramanian said \u201ct<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">his is a welcome move which will enable better trade both for the importers as well as the exporters because we have quite a lot of export<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">s<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> going on, lots of Nigerians in the\u00a0 US. Shipping companies will be a little more bold in their expansion plans for the future<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">.<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-GB\">With the <\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">US remov<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">al of<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> the Condition of Entry (COE), it is saying that <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Nigeria <\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">look<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">s<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> more like a safer environment<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> than previously perceived\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">According to him, the lifting of the restriction<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> reflects an improved confidence in <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">the Nigerian<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> maritime security<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> urging relevant authorities to sustain these gains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">On his part, the Nigeria Director of Ocean Network Express (ONE) in Nigeria, Mr. Stefan Pedersen also congratulated Nigeria for the feat even though his company does not have direct services to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201c<span class=\"markd47ffucpl uM2yb\" data-markjs=\"true\">Congratulations<\/span> to Nigeria on the lifting of the Condition of Entry. It shows the work that NIMASA has been doing all these years has actually paid off so that is good. At the moment ONE does not have any direct sailings to and from the US so we are not really impacted by this. I\u2019m certain that it would make direct trade with the US through the ports easier. When restrictions go away, it usually improves trade, so for our colleagues in the industry that have direct sailings to the US, it\u2019s going to make it easier for them\u201d, the Director said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Another shipping line, Pacific International Lines (PIL) also welcomed the development saying the lifting of the Condition of Entry will positively impact the image of Nigeria as a serious maritime country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">According to the Managing Director, Mr Ugo Opiah, \u201cI think it\u2019s a very good one in terms of the image. Of course, the US is categorized as one of, let\u2019s say, the big brother of the world, and most times if you do qualify for things that concerns the US, then you are seen as a high-integrity player. So for Nigeria, with this being lifted after the number of years that it had been on us, it does give a good sign that we have upped our game in terms of anything to do with security in the maritime industry\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Another major shipping line, Mediterranean Shipping Company noted that being a shipping line that calls virtually all major ports in the world including the United States, their business was slightly impacted by the delays occasioned by the restriction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">According to Mr Adesina Omoparuwa, Vessel and Terminal Coordinator for MSC, \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">because of this restriction, we have to do some trans-shipment<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">s. We do not have direct services to the US<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\"> like we have now in China<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">.<\/span> <span lang=\"EN-GB\">B<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">asically China\u2019s service that we have now, we d<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">id<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">n\u2019t have them before, we have to go through trans-shipment ports, but now <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">with <\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">this <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">development<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">, it will give us more direct service from the US and opportunities for people that are doing business from the US to come directly down to Nigeria<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"ZH-CN\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The lifting of the Condition of Entry on vessels that have visited Nigerian ports in their last five port calls and destined for the United States brings to an end a 12-year regime of enhanced security on such vessels and marks a significant milestone in the Federal Government\u2019s effort to strengthen maritime security, improve port competitiveness and enhance
