Its role has since evolved to address a broader range of marine pollution challenges, with an increasing focus on preventing pollution from ships.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past five decades, REMPEC has helped\u00a020 Mediterranean countries establish operational marine pollution contingency systems, provided\u00a024\/7 expert support through the Mediterranean Assistance Unit, and trained\u00a0more than 5,000 government officials and volunteers\u00a0in pollution preparedness and response. Its work has also supported countries in strengthening legislation to prevent pollution from ships and contributed to regional efforts towards the transition to lower-carbon shipping.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">IMO Secretary-General\u00a0Arsenio Dominguez\u00a0joined the anniversary event, highlighting the importance of continued regional cooperation to protect one of the world&#8217;s most important and shared marine environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mediterranean connects communities, economies and ecosystems across its shores. Its protection depends on sustained cooperation, preparedness and a shared commitment to action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As REMPEC looks to the next 50 years, its role remains as relevant as ever \u2014 helping Mediterranean countries prepare for emerging environmental challenges, strengthen pollution prevention and response, and work together to protect the sea for
