The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, believes that dredging the access channel to the Port of Maputo should transform Mozambique\u2019s geostrategic position into a regional economic strength by increasing trade, attracting investment, boosting production and expanding exports.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Maputo today at the launch of the dredging works, the Head of State stated that deepening the channel would create the conditions for Mozambique to \u201chandle more trade, attract more investment, produce and export more, better serve our region and transform our geostrategic position into a genuine economic force within the SADC region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Head of State explained that although the intervention may not be visible on the surface, it would have significant effects on the national economy, the competitiveness of the Port of Maputo and the creation of opportunities for Mozambicans.<\/p>\n

Estimated at approximately US$150 million, the project forms part of an investment programme in the Port of Maputo worth more than US$2 billion. It will prepare the infrastructure to meet the requirements of larger vessels and enable the port to compete within the regional and international logistics system over the coming decades.<\/p>\n

Following the intervention, the channel will be equipped to accommodate vessels approximately 366 metres long, with a capacity to carry up to 14,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and drafts of close to 15 metres.<\/p>\n

The width of the channel will increase from approximately 110 metres in straight sections and 150 metres in curved sections to around 210 metres and 295 metres, respectively, creating better navigation conditions for large vessels.<\/p>\n

According to the Head of State, the Port of Maputo handled approximately 32 million tonnes of cargo in 2025. This activity generated opportunities for national transport operators and small and medium-sized enterprises, created jobs for young people, provided revenue for the State and facilitated the transfer of knowledge and technology.<\/p>\n

Daniel Chapo argued that development corridors must no longer serve merely as routes through which wealth passes. \u201cThey must be corridors where wealth is produced, transformed, retained and owned by everyone,\u201d he said, stressing that this process should be accompanied by the growth of activities such as agro-processing, logistics, tourism, agriculture, trade and industry.<\/p>\n

At the regional level, the Mozambican President highlighted the role of the Port of Maputo in connecting major production centres in South Africa, the Kingdom of Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana and other countries to international markets. \u201cWhen a Mozambican port becomes more competitive, we do not simply bring Mozambique closer to the world. We bring Southern Africa closer to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Head of State also emphasised that port efficiency depends on coordination between railways, roads, border crossings, customs authorities, payment systems and logistics operators. He called for the simplification of procedures, digitalisation, system interoperability and stronger coordination between public and private institutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot deepen the channel while leaving bureaucratic obstacles in place on the surface. We will not be fully efficient,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

In this context, he highlighted the launch, in July this year, of the first Maputo Port Community System as an important step towards improving logistics efficiency. He stressed that cargo must move efficiently by sea, through the port, by rail, by road and across borders.<\/p>\n

The President of the Republic further highlighted the need to ensure that infrastructure modernisation is accompanied by the development of national skills and expertise. \u201cBehind every ship in this port, every crane, every locomotive and every digital system, there must be an increasing level of Mozambican expertise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Head of State also maintained that investments must create opportunities for national companies, enhance the value of Mozambican workers, promote the transfer of knowledge and technology, and ensure environmental and social responsibility. He stressed that \u201ceconomic growth must translate into tangible improvements in the living conditions of our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the final part of his address, President Daniel Chapo emphasised that the success of the project would depend on its ability to drive inclusive economic development, create jobs\u2014particularly for young people and Mozambican women\u2014and strengthen regional integration. He maintained that the modernisation of the Port of Maputo must contribute to a more productive, competitive and independent national economy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
