IMO Secretary-General\u00a0Kitack\u00a0Lim has welcomed the launch of a new collaborative framework to combat illicit maritime activities in the Gulf of Guinea. Speaking at the inaugural meeting (14 July) of the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Collaboration Forum \u2013 SHADE (<\/span>GOG-MCF\/SHADE<\/span><\/span><\/a>)\u00a0project,\u00a0Mr. Lim said<\/a>\u00a0he was encouraged by its establishment.\u00a0 GOG-MCF\/SHADE aims to facilitate shared awareness and de-conflict activities in the region by linking all relevant stakeholders to advance and coordinate maritime security activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe security situation in the Gulf of Guinea remains at the top of IMO\u2019s and my personal priorities,\u201d Mr. Lim said. \u201cInternational shipping is suffering. Piracy and armed robbery continue to damage the economy and trade. This situation has continued for several years, and these illegal acts must be stopped. Now is the time to make real progress.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The GOG-MCF\/SHADE is co-chaired by the Inter Regional Coordination Centre (ICC) Yaound\u00e9 and Nigeria.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mr. Lim acknowledged positive strides in the area of interagency cooperation and response<\/span>\u00a0on a regional and international level<\/span>, highlighting anti-piracy legislation passed by Ghana, recent convictions of pirates in Togo, and Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Deep Blue<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Project.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

IMO continues to support training and other capacity-building activities for individual Gulf of Guinea States as well as cooperative regional efforts, under the framework of the Yaound\u00e9 Code of Conduct, an agreement signed by countries in the region who commit to working to repress piracy, armed robbery against ships and other illicit maritime activity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the request of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS and the Gulf of Guinea Commission, IMO continues\u00a0to work with the ICC Yaound\u00e9, including supporting a series of regional expert level online meetings aiming to assess the implementation and sustainability of the Yaound\u00e9 Code of Conduct and to provide recommendations to the three organizations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In May, IMO\u2019s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) called for further action to address piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Gulf of Guinea (read more\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/span><\/a>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
