Sullivan invited Ghanaian government and military dignitaries for a ship tour led by Captain Chad Graham, commanding officer of USS Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams.\u00a0 Ministry of Defense officials, Ghana Navy officers, and Members of Parliament toured the ship and viewed a flight deck demonstration of the ship\u2019s casualty and medical response capabilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">USS Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams is the first warship permanently assigned to the U.S. Africa Command area of responsibility. The U.S. shares a common interest with African partner nations in ensuring security, safety, and freedom of navigation on the waters surrounding the continent, because these waters are critical for Africa\u2019s prosperity and access to global markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ship is a highly flexible platform that may be used across a broad range of military operations. Acting as a mobile sea base, it is part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier this month, members of Ghana\u2019s Special Boat Squadron joined the crew on the Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams to participate in a maritime security capabilities exercise with partners in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt was great having our Ghanaian embarkees aboard to interact with the crew, and to participate in the maritime security capabilities exercise we conducted,\u201d Capt. Chad Graham, commanding officer, USS Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams, said. \u201cIn-person interactions like this go a long way toward solidifying national partnerships, and we look forward to building on our two navies\u2019 relationship in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy, who are studying abroad this semester at the University of Ghana, also participated in the ship visit as a part of a larger Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) initiative led by the Commander, Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF).
