{"id":8467,"date":"2022-02-28T19:53:27","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T18:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/?p=8467"},"modified":"2022-02-28T19:53:29","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T18:53:29","slug":"president-akufo-addo-commissions-four-4-ships-for-the-navy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/president-akufo-addo-commissions-four-4-ships-for-the-navy\/","title":{"rendered":"President Akufo-Addo Commissions Four (4) Ships For The Navy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8470 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship-1024x597.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-naval-ship-768x448.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Friday, 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0February 2022, commissioned four (4) new vessels acquired for use by the Ghana Navy, at a ceremony at the Sekondi-Takoradi Naval Base.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The acquisition of these vessels, according President Akufo-Addo, \u201cis yet a further manifestation of the commitment of Government to retool and re-equip the Ghana Armed Forces to enable them perform their duty of protecting the territorial integrity of our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Delivering a speech at the event, the President indicated that these vessels \u2013 Ghana Navy Ship Volta, Ghana Navy Ship Densu, Ghana Navy Ship Pra and Ghana Navy Ship Ankobra \u2013 have been fittingly named after some of Ghana\u2019s famous rivers.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is in recognition of significant progress being made by the Armed Forces to end illegal mining in our river bodies, and help restore them to their natural state. Naming these ships after them is entirely appropriate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With Ghana, and, indeed, West Africa, currently confronted with twin threats posed by terrorism and violent extremism from the Sahel, and by piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, President Akufo-Addo stated that his government is determined to do everything within its power to guarantee the nation\u2019s territorial integrity, and ensure the safety of Ghanaians.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Outlining the actions that have been taken t actions have already been taken to protect the country\u2019s northern borders from the onslaught of violent extremists and terrorists, the President stated that the Northern Border Project, designed to safeguard our land borders in the North, is progressing steadily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This, he said, will include the establishment of forward operating bases (FOB) along the northern perimeters, and equipping them with state-of-the-art equipment to defend the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He added that with the country\u2019s economy highly dependent on offshore resources, coupled with the enormous potentials of the maritime sector to contribute to Ghana\u2019s food security and employment generation efforts, he stated that these make the provision of effective maritime security of the utmost necessity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-navy-ship.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8471 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-navy-ship.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-navy-ship.jpg 600w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Akufo-Addo-navy-ship-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTherefore, the Ghana Navy, as the lead maritime security agency, deserves all the support it needs to enable it carry out its duties efficiently and effectively,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Akufo-Addo continued, \u201cIn addition to these four ships being commissioned today, Government is in the process of acquiring two (2) offshore patrol vessels with high endurance limits, to maintain constant presence at sea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Government, he further added, will also procure some more patrol vessels to respond to the myriad of threats along the coastline, stressing that \u201cfinancing for the acquisition of these ships has been already provided for in the security sector retooling programme, initiated by the Akufo-Addo Government\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The President was confident that with the arrival of these four (4) \u201criver class\u201d ships, as well as the imminent coming into play of the others, the Navy, working in collaboration with other services, will be well-equipped to protect our maritime domain, which will, in turn, serve as a boost for the fisheries and shipping sectors, as well as for offshore oil and gas production.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIndeed, these four (4) ships are to provide dedicated security to our offshore oil and gas installations, which have, hitherto, been, regrettably, unprotected. They were acquired through a public-private partnership between the Ministry of Defence, Israel Shipyards Ltd, Ghana Commercial Bank and two (2) international oil companies,\u201d President Akufo-Addo said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He, thus, reaffirmed his confidence and that of the nation in the competence, dedication and professionalism of the officers, men, women and civilian staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTheir loyalty to the Republic and to the maintenance of its constitutional order continues to be exemplary.
