The Nigerian Maritime Administration and\u00a0Safety Agency, NIMASA, the Nigerian Navy and the Interregional Coordination Centre, ICC, today highlighted the need for continuous collaboration with regional and international stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of security in the Gulf of Guinea.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was the thrust of presentations at the 5th<\/sup>plenary of the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Collaboration Forum\/Shared Awareness and\u00a0De-confliction\u00a0meeting which has \u2018Enduring and Sustainable Security\u2019 as its theme.<\/p>\n

The Director General of NIMASA, Dr.\u00a0Bashir\u00a0Jamoh,who noted that collaboration and co-operation was central in attaining enhanced security in the Gulf of Guinea in recent times, said that NIMASA is committed to providing all logistics required for members of the SHADE\/FORUM to thrive and maintain the\u00a0momentum.<\/p>\n

Jamoh\u00a0said \u201cTwo years ago, we connected virtually with our unhappy stakeholders,\u00a0with challenges of piracy attaining its peak in the Gulf of Guinea between 2019\u00a0and\u00a02020. But today, even the International Maritime Bureau, IMB,\u00a0has affirmed that piracy is at a 28-year all-time low in the region.<\/p>\n

\n

In his words: \u201cThe SHADE must be nurtured to remain a force for good. As members we owe a collective duty to this forum to keep its dialogue robust and guard it from slipping into complacency as to become\u00a0a toothless bulldog. Our SHADE must be strengthened through cooperation, coordination, collaboration and communication. Security success can never be\u00a0by\u00a0solitary achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

\u201cThere must be cooperation between regional navies like we saw recently between Nigeria and Benin. We are all contributors to the success we are currently experiencing in the area of maritime security\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr.\u00a0Kitack\u00a0Lim, who addressed the Forum\u00a0virtually,\u00a0congratulated Nigeria on the efforts it has embarked on to improve security in its territorial waters\u00a0and the Gulf of Guinea domain at large. He challenged members of the SHADE FORUM to maintain the momentum in order to sustain\u00a0the\u00a0gains of the past one\u00a0year.<\/p>\n

\n

According to him, \u201cMaintaining the momentum of gains made so far is the main challenge for the regional navies. To do so, you must address the root causes of piracy including the plight of coastal communities, in order to reach sustainable solutions\u00a0to the issue of piracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Also speaking at the forum, the Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral\u00a0Awwal\u00a0Gambo, noted \u00a0that the successes recorded in the Gulf of Guinea was due to the\u00a0collaboration, information and data sharing \u00a0amongst countries in the Gulf of\u00a0Guinea.<\/p>\n

The CNS who was represented by the Chief of Planning,\u00a0Nigerian Navy\u00a0Headquarters,\u00a0Real Admiral\u00a0Saidu\u00a0Garba\u00a0emphasized the need to sustain the momentum through institutional capacity building for maritime governance.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThere is still room for greater collaboration in the areas of Information sharing, increased presence of naval assets and strengthened legal frameworks among the\u00a0GoG\u00a0nations as well as international partners, which are all key to ensuring success of the\u00a0Yaounde\u00a0Architecture. The safety and security of shipping in the\u00a0GoG\u00a0is a vital enabler in the recovery process of global economy and\u00a0trade\u00a0downturn\u00a0suffered due to COVID 19 pandemic\u201d,\u00a0he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Other stakeholders present at the 5th plenary are Director, Interregional Coordination Centre (ICC-Yaounde), Admiral Narciso Fastudo, Co-chair, SHADE \u2013GoG\/Maritime Collaboration Forum, Rear Admiral Solomon Agada, Special Advisor to the chairs of the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Collaboration Forum, Simon Church.<\/p>\n

The goal of the forum is to implement effective operational counter-piracy cooperation amongst regional and international Navies,\u00a0as well as the shipping industry and reporting\u00a0centres\u00a0of the\u00a0Yaounde\u00a0Code of Conduct\u00a0(ICC) for\u00a0the\u00a0Regional Strategy for Maritime Safety and Security in Central and West Africa region;\u00a0with this year\u2019s edition of the event being hosted by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in partnership with the Interregional Coordination Centre (ICC)\u00a0Yaounde, and the Nigerian Navy.<\/p>\n
