But today, even the International Maritime Bureau, IMB,\u00a0has affirmed that piracy is at a 28-year all-time low in the region.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his words: \u201cThe SHADE must be nurtured to remain a force for good. As members we owe a collective duty to this forum to keep its dialogue robust and guard it from slipping into complacency as to become\u00a0a toothless bulldog. Our SHADE must be strengthened through cooperation, coordination, collaboration and communication. Security success can never be\u00a0by\u00a0solitary achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere must be cooperation between regional navies like we saw recently between Nigeria and Benin. We are all contributors to the success we are currently experiencing in the area of maritime security\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr.\u00a0Kitack\u00a0Lim, who addressed the Forum\u00a0virtually,\u00a0congratulated Nigeria on the efforts it has embarked on to improve security in its territorial waters\u00a0and the Gulf of Guinea domain at large. He challenged members of the SHADE FORUM to maintain the momentum in order to sustain\u00a0the\u00a0gains of the past one\u00a0year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, \u201cMaintaining the momentum of gains made so far is the main challenge for the regional navies. The safety and security of shipping in the\u00a0GoG\u00a0is a vital enabler in the recovery process of global economy and\u00a0trade\u00a0downturn\u00a0suffered due to COVID 19 pandemic\u201d,\u00a0he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other stakeholders present at the 5th plenary are Director, Interregional Coordination Centre (ICC-Yaounde), Admiral Narciso Fastudo, Co-chair, SHADE \u2013GoG\/Maritime Collaboration Forum, Rear Admiral Solomon Agada, Special Advisor to the chairs of the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Collaboration Forum, Simon Church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The goal of the forum is to implement effective operational counter-piracy cooperation amongst regional and international Navies,\u00a0as well as the shipping industry and reporting\u00a0centres\u00a0of the\u00a0Yaounde\u00a0Code of Conduct\u00a0(ICC) for\u00a0the\u00a0Regional Strategy for Maritime Safety and Security in Central and West Africa region;\u00a0with this year\u2019s edition of the event being hosted by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) in partnership with the Interregional Coordination Centre
