Unfortunately, his plan never came to fruition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, Patrick Miller of Dalswinton, who was at his first trial, created a steamboat in Scotland in 1788 with William Symington. But Patrick Miller of Dalswinton later abandoned the project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1800, Thomas Dundas, Governor of the Forth and Clyde Canal Company, better known as Lord Dundas, commissioned William Symington to design a steam tug. The vessel was built by Symington. In June 1801, successful trials took place on the River Carron and further trials were conducted to tow sloops from the River Forth up the Carron and thence along the Forth and Clyde Canals. However, other canal owners, concerned about wave damage to the canal banks, petitioned the Committee who decided that the vessel &#8220;<strong>was in no way fit for purpose<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8998\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Charlotte_dundas_drawing_bowie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8998 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Charlotte_dundas_drawing_bowie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Charlotte_dundas_drawing_bowie.jpg 550w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Charlotte_dundas_drawing_bowie-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maritimafrica.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Charlotte_dundas_drawing_bowie-390x205.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Charlotte Dundas, the first tug built, in 1802.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Symington then built an improved boat in 1802, with a horizontal engine driving a large central paddle wheel, the Charlotte Dundas, named after one of Lord Dundas&#8217; daughters. The Charlotte Dundas first sailed on 4 January 1803.
