Togo/Fishing: A remarkable 50% increase in fish production by 2022
In Togo, fishing plays an important role in the national economy. With an estimated 6,687,015 tonnes in 2022, compared to 4,129,423 tonnes in 2021 and 3,456,407 in 2020, the fishing sector has grown significantly in recent years.
Fish production in 2022 has recorded a remarkable increase of 50% not only due to the opening of the new fishing port and its new fish market, but also due to the implementation of new working arrangements for fishermen and fishmongers. This has led to the arrival of new national and international fishermen, an increase in the number of pirogues and, naturally, a greater quantity of fish products brought back from the sea.
In addition, the Togolese government through the Ministry of Maritime Economy, Fisheries and Coastal Protection has carried out various actions to promote fishing and aquaculture in our country. With the right resources and support, Togolese fishermen can make the most of their skills, providing them with better livelihoods and greater economic stability for their families.
It should also be noted that the fisheries sector in Togo generates more than 20,000 jobs and contributes about 4.5% of the gross domestic product. By continuing with the dynamic of investment in this sector driven by the Head of State, His Excellency President Faure Gnassingbé, it can become much more productive and prosperous, offering even more indispensable jobs especially to the coastal populations, reinforcing food security and making an important contribution to the national economy.
