The Port Authority of Douala signs a contract with DAMEN SHIPYARDS GORINCHEM for the purchase of two new ASD 2811 tugs

The Port Authority of Douala (PAD), the port authority of the Port of Douala-Bonabéri, is continuing its efforts to strengthen its tugboat infrastructure with the acquisition of two new ASD 2811 tugs with a capacity of 60TBP.

The Managing Director of the Port Authority of Douala, Cyrus NGO’O, and Jan Van Der Vorm, Africa Regional Director of Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, recently signed a contract to this effect. The contract covers various aspects, including the construction of the tugs, CIF Douala transport, staff training, technical assistance for one year after the sale, the supply of spare parts and insurance.

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem will be working in partnership with two national companies selected as prime contractors: Parc National de Matériels de Génie Civil (Matgenie) and Chantier Naval et Industriel du Cameroun (CNIC).

The importance of this investment lies in the fact that it is the first major investment undertaken by the Port Authority of Douala to modernise its towing fleet since the departure of Boluda, the previous concessionaire. Following the termination of the concession contract, the PAD took over the management of the towing activity from 2 January 2021, using old vessels, the oldest of which was 54 years old.

Damen Shipyards Gorinchem, which has a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1923, is a world-renowned manufacturer specialising in shipbuilding.
