Strategic partnership between Senegal and China for the development of aquaculture in Senegal
On the occasion of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in Beijing from 04 to 06 September 2024, a Senegalese delegation from the National Aquaculture Agency (ANA), comprising Dr Samba KA, Director General, and Mr Mamadou Sène, Technical Director, was invited by the China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), one of the largest Chinese companies to excel in agricultural and aquaculture engineering, with proven experience in the development and construction of large-scale infrastructure on the African continent.
The trip provided an opportunity to consolidate relations between the two entities with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), following an expression of interest by CMEC, to support Senegal in further developing its aquaculture potential. The aim of the MoU is to establish a partnership for the implementation of a marine aquaculture development project in Senegal. It was also an opportunity to visit the Dalian Fugu Seafood Group’s marine aquaculture farms in Dalian, a CMEC partner with extensive experience in the field.
Negotiations were also held with China National Fisheries and Aquaculture (CNFA), another ANA partner. CNFA’s ambition is to develop an aquaculture industrial park in the Saint-Louis region, at a total cost of around CFAF 18 billion. This project is almost ready to start, as all the preliminary studies have already been carried out.
Thanks to this proactive attitude in setting up targeted partnerships, Senegal is sure to rise to the challenge of making aquaculture a flagship sector of its national economy.
