Unlocking the Potential of Inland Waterways in the Blue Economy for Regional Integration

Inland waterways hold immense potential in the Blue Economy sector, particularly for land-linked countries, serving as vital corridors for cross-border trade and regional integration. Recognizing this opportunity, IGAD conducted a three-day case study visit to South Sudan to assess the sector’s opportunities and challenges.

With its extensive inland river networks connecting neighboring countries, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Uganda, South Sudan is strategically positioned to enhance connectivity, facilitate trade, and drive socio-economic growth in the region. This assessment aims to inform strategies for optimizing inland waterways, strengthening regional integration, and boosting the Blue Economy in the IGAD region.
