East Mole: Congo Terminal announces the end of backfill work
On 12 June 2025, Congo Terminal announced the completion of backfilling work on the new port platform at the East Mole of the Port Autonome de Pointe-Noire (PAPN). Nearly 1,200,000 m³ of sand were used for this work, half of which came from the sand trap located to the right of the breakwater, thereby minimising maintenance dredging by PAPN.
The company is satisfied with the state of progress of the work and assures that this stage guarantees respect for the execution deadlines of the project which should be operational in the 1st quarter of 2027.
‘We have carried out the 1st phase of dredging in the area between the inner breakwater and the future East Mole quay to increase the draught to -9m (which will then be increased to -17m) and to gather the additional sand needed to fill the new port platform. This work has now been completed. We have just embarked on the next phase, which is the construction of the new 750 m long quay,’ explains Pierre-Louis Sapin, Project Manager.
This extension project is being carried out by the local branches of international companies. They are currently employing 300 people, drawing on their cutting-edge expertise in civil engineering. The complexity of the work in a port environment means that they are also acquiring new skills.
As the exclusive operator of the Pointe-Noire container terminal, Congo Terminal is committed to investing more than 400 million euros in the construction of this new platform at the East Mole to support the economic growth of the country and the sub-region. This extension will create 900 additional permanent jobs for young Congolese people, in addition to the jobs linked to the construction work.
