NaFAA Signs Agreement to Empower Women in Fisheries Across Liberia

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), has signed a landmark agreement with the iCampus Liberia Consortium to implement the Liberian Women Sustainable Fisheries and Livelihood Incubator (LWSFILI) Program across Liberia’s nine coastal counties.

Funded by the OPEC Fund for International Development through the Liberia Integrated Fisheries Sector Strengthening Project (LIFSSP), the program is designed to empower women by providing entrepreneurship training, business incubation, technical skills development, mentorship, and access to business support services.

Speaking during the signing ceremony at NaFAA Headquarters in Monrovia, J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr., Director General of NaFAA described the initiative as a transformative investment in Liberia’s women and coastal communities.

“The LWSFILI Program will equip women with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to build successful businesses, improve household incomes, and make meaningful contributions to the growth of Liberia’s blue economy,” he said.

He emphasized that the partnership reflects NaFAA’s commitment to promoting inclusive economic growth, innovation, and sustainable employment opportunities within the fisheries sector.

On behalf of the consortium, Chief Executive Officer Luther D. Jeke thanked NaFAA for the confidence placed in the team, reaffirming the consortium’s commitment to delivering lasting impact alongside its partners—Business Start-Up Center Monrovia (BSC), Agro Tech Liberia, and the Liberia Research and Development Networks (LRDN).

The LWSFILI Program is expected to strengthen women’s participation in Liberia’s fisheries value chain by supporting enterprise development, enhancing livelihoods, and building more resilient coastal communities. The initiative represents another important step toward advancing sustainable fisheries and expanding economic opportunities for women across Liberia.
