Liberia – NaFAA Hosts Third Quarter Fisheries Development Partners Coordination Group Meeting
The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) on Friday hosted its Third Quarter Fisheries Development Partners Coordination Group Meeting, bringing together key development partners, including the World Bank, European Union, UNDP, FAO, the United States Embassy, the Embassy of Egypt, and others.
The meeting, hosted at the United Nations Development Programme, reviewed progress across several priority initiatives, including NaFAA’s 10-Year Strategic Plan, Fisheries Investment Plan, and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Strategy. Discussions also highlighted preparations for the 2026 World Fisheries Day celebrations, the newly established NaFAA Call Center, progress on the Klay Hatchery rehabilitation, the ongoing Fisheries Complex construction, and the critical role of the Department of Quality Assurance in strengthening standards and quality within Liberia’s fisheries sector.
During the opening session, the UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Aliou Mamadou Dia, expressed optimism about the future of Liberia’s fisheries sector and commended NaFAA’s leadership for fostering professional, constructive, and sustained engagement with development partners. He also acknowledged the commitment of partners to using the platform to strengthen coordination, collaboration, and synergies in support of the sector’s development priorities.
Speaking on behalf of the European Union, the Co-Chair of the Fisheries Development Partners Coordination Group emphasized the importance of leveraging this coordination platform to further align partner interventions, enhance complementarity, and intensify support to Liberia’s fisheries sector. She encouraged development partners to capitalize on the platform as a mechanism for mobilizing resources, sharing expertise, and collectively advancing the sector’s transformation and contribution to Liberia’s blue economy.
Development partners also provided updates on their respective programs and activities, identifying areas of synergy and opportunities for deeper collaboration and coordination.
A key outcome of the meeting was agreement on the decentralization of NaFAA’s services across Liberia’s nine coastal counties, aimed at bringing fisheries services closer to fishing communities, improving responsiveness, and enhancing service delivery.
The Fisheries Development Partners Coordination Group was established in April 2025 as a strategic mechanism to strengthen synergy, coordination, transparency, and collaboration among fisheries development partners. The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority chairs alongside the European Union as Co-Chair.
Since its establishment, the platform has contributed to deepening partners’ trust and confidence in NaFAA’s leadership and in the Government of Liberia under the leadership of His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., while creating a more coordinated pathway toward sustainable fisheries development and growth of Liberia’s blue economy.
