East Quay: Congo Terminal is continuing with the construction of a 100 per cent electric container terminal
Congo Terminal, a subsidiary of AGL (Africa Global Logistics), is continuing the construction of the East Quay, which began in 2024. This new port infrastructure, scheduled to come into operation in the first half of 2027, will increase the Port of Pointe-Noire’s capacity to receive and handle containers, using 100 per cent electric handling equipment.
With a draught of -17 metres, the East Quay will be able to accommodate large-capacity container ships, up to 400 metres in length and with a capacity of 24,000 TEU. These specifications reflect the increasing size of vessels operating on major international shipping routes.
The future terminal will be operated using electric cargo-handling equipment, including ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, electric reach stackers (e-RTGs) and electric harbour tractors. This configuration aims to reduce direct emissions associated with cargo-handling operations compared with the use of equivalent equipment powered by internal combustion engines.
The site will cover 27 hectares and will incorporate several systems designed to manage resources and effluent. The administrative building will include a solar hot water system as well as equipment enabling the reuse of certain types of water. Water collected on site will be treated before discharge in accordance with the provisions set out in the terminal’s operating procedures.
From the design stage, the project has incorporated objectives to minimise energy and water consumption. The administrative building has been designed to meet the criteria for EDGE Advanced certification, for which an assessment is currently underway.
Môle Est forms part of Congo Terminal’s investment programme aimed at adapting Pointe-Noire’s port infrastructure to developments in maritime transport and the growth in containerised freight flows. Its commissioning is expected to increase the terminal’s operational capacity and support the logistical needs of the customers served by the port.
