Kenya – Strengthening Blue Food Systems for Healthier Communities
The Strengthening Sustainable Blue Food Systems in Coastal Kenya to Enhance Livelihoods, Food Security and Nutrition (SBFS-Kenya) Project today convened an inception workshop for its Aquaculture and Blue Food Safety components at the Kenya School of Government, Matuga, Kwale County.
The meeting formally launched the Aquaculture and Blue Food Safety components and brought together KMFRI, partners, government representatives, local stakeholders, community members, and other value chain actors in the aquaculture, capture fisheries, and seaweed value chains to establish a shared understanding of the project’s objectives, scope, implementation approach, and expected outcomes.
The engagement provided an important platform for stakeholders to strengthen collaboration and lay the foundation for interventions aimed at improving aquaculture production and practices, blue food safety, livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and sustainable ocean planning for blue food systems in the Shimoni-Vanga Joint Co-management Area (JCMA). It also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to collaboratively identify site-specific opportunities, constraints, and potential risks to inform sustainable aquaculture development within the JCMA.
The project, funded by Norad under the Ocean for Development Programme and implemented in partnership with the Institute of Marine Research, Norway, aims to enhance livelihoods, food security, and nutrition through sustainable blue food systems in the Shimoni-Vanga, Kwale County.
Through this project, KMFRI is working to strengthen sustainable aquaculture and enhance blue food safety as a pathway to diversified livelihoods, improved food security and nutrition, and greater resilience among coastal communities.
