COMOROS – MUTSAMUDU PORT: NEW EQUIPMENT TO STRENGTHEN COASTAL RISK PREVENTION

In the face of risks posed by marine flooding, high waves and severe weather, Mutsamudu is benefiting from oceanographic monitoring equipment expected to play an important role in preventing coastal disasters.

In this regard, new equipment was officially handed over to the port authorities of Mutsamudu on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. Funded by the World Bank under the Regional Climate Resilience Project (PRRC), these instruments are intended to improve understanding of maritime and meteorological conditions in order to better anticipate risks and protect coastal communities.

Three pieces of equipment to monitor maritime and meteorological conditions

The equipment comprises a tide gauge, a wave-measuring buoy and a weather station.

The tide gauge will make it possible to monitor variations in sea level. The wave-measuring buoy will be used to collect data on wave conditions. The weather station will contribute to the monitoring of atmospheric conditions.

The data collected through these three pieces of equipment could help improve early warning systems, enhance navigational safety and strengthen the prevention of risks that may affect coastal communities, port infrastructure and maritime activities.

Although the provision of this equipment represents a promising step forward, its effectiveness will depend on several factors, including proper functioning, regular observations and the effective use of the information collected.
