Congo Terminal has surpassed the one million TEU target and is strengthening its role as a regional hub

Congo Terminal has reached a major step: 1,200,000 TEU had been handled as at 1 October 2026, enabling it to surpass the symbolic one-million mark before the end of the year. With three new regular services and unprecedented call frequencies for large vessels, the terminal is targeting 1.3 million TEU by the end of 2026.

This result reflects the sustained growth in activity and the teams’ constant commitment in the face of expanding port operations.

A key player in Congolese foreign trade and regional trade flows, Congo Terminal is the Republic of Congo’s only container terminal. It holds the exclusive right to handle containers at the Autonomous Port of Pointe-Noire and, as such, handles 100 per cent of the country’s containerized traffic.

As the main transshipment hub in sub-Saharan Africa, volumes are up by around 11 per cent compared with the same period in 2025. From Pointe-Noire, goods are forwarded to the DRC, Cameroon, Angola and Gabon, confirming the port’s role as a leading regional hub. The launch of three new regular services this year has strengthened the terminal’s maritime connectivity: Maersk’s W7A (around 1,000 movements per call), CMA CGM’s EURAF 5 (up to 450 movements per call) and the IAS operated by MSC (up to 1,250 movements per call).

For 15,000 TEU container ships, Congo Terminal achieves an average throughput of 27 movements per hour. This result confirms the terminal’s ability to efficiently handle the region’s largest container ships whilst maintaining high productivity standards.

To support this growth, Congo Terminal is preparing to expand its terminal with the East Mole: a 750-meters, 100 per cent electric quay that will double the terminal’s capacity. It is scheduled to come into service in 2027.

“Reaching one million TEU validates a strategy based on connectivity, productivity and investment. This success reflects the confidence of major shipping lines, as well as the quality of our team’s work. With the three new regular services and our ability to accommodate the largest vessels, we are preparing Pointe-Noire for the volumes of the future. The East Mole, which will double our capacity by 2027, is the next step,” said Anthony Samzun, Managing Director of Congo Terminal

“Reaching the one million TEU mark is a significant milestone for Congo Terminal. This achievement is, above all, the result of our teams’ daily commitment and our collective ability to maintain a high level of operational performance. We must now build on this momentum to achieve our target of 1.3 million TEU by the end of 2026,” emphasises Emmanuel Addo, Operations Director at Congo Terminal.

By reaching this symbolic milestone, Congo Terminal is consolidating its position as a leading port hub, contributing to the competitiveness of the Congolese corridor and strengthening the strategic role of the port of Pointe-Noire in regional and international supply chains.
