Untimely death of Gilbert Langat, CEO of Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA)
The East African maritime and port sector is mourning the untimely loss of Mr. Gilbert Langat, CEO of the Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA) and Chairman of the Mombasa Port and Northern Corridor Community Charter. Mr. Langat passed away on Sunday December 31, 2023, at his home in Kericho, after a courageous battle against a long illness.
Mr. Langat, Advisor to the Governor of Mombasa on Port Affairs, was an enlightened leader whose legacy transcended Kenya’s borders. He held an Executive MBA from Copenhagen Business School / Innoorero University and a Certificate in Corporate Governance from the International Centre for Leadership and Development (ICLAD), Institute of Internal Auditors, Advocacy Competence Course – Business Advocacy Fund (BAF).
His professional career was impressive, marked by his role as Director of Kenya Trade Network Agency since June 2011, where he contributed significantly for 12 years. He was also Director and Board Member of Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) from September 2010 to September 2015, as well as Managing Director of Kenya Shippers Council from July 2006 to January 2013.
Mombasa County Governor Mr. Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir expressed his deep sadness in a message on his X account, stating, “We were deeply saddened to learn of Gilbert’s passing in Kericho earlier today, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies as we collectively mourn his loss and reflect upon his life.”

Mr. Nassir underlined the considerable impact of Mr. Langat’s work, which has helped to open minds and bring people together, uniting national patriotism and pragmatic governance of county affairs. He hailed Mr. Langat as a trailblazer in his field and stressed that his legacy will live on in Kenya and throughout the region.
The Governor also shared his belief that Mr. Langat’s ideals and vision for a beneficial port for his host country will continue to be a guiding force in national discourse in the future. At this difficult time, he assured that all those affected are in their thoughts and prayers.
