MOESNA Secretary General Holds High-Level Courtesy Meeting with World Maritime University Leadership in Malmö, Sweden

The Secretary General of the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA), Mr. Kassim K. Mpaata, paid a courtesy visit to the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden, on 6 July 2026, where he held high-level discussions with the University’s Vice President (Provost), Professor Michael Ekow Manuel, on behalf of the President of the University.

The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between MOESNA and the WMU and provided an opportunity for both institutions to exchange views on advancing maritime capacity development across Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa.

Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the development of highly skilled maritime professionals capable of responding to emerging challenges and opportunities in the global maritime sector. The two leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in maritime education, executive and professional training, institutional capacity building, research, policy development, and technical cooperation aimed at supporting sustainable maritime development within the MOESNA region.

The Secretary General highlighted MOESNA’s commitment to supporting its Member States in building resilient maritime institutions and developing the human capital required to implement international maritime instruments, improve maritime governance, enhance safety and security, promote environmental sustainability, advance general maritime domain awareness, and accelerate the blue economy.

The Vice President (Provost) reaffirmed WMU’s commitment to working with regional institutions to strengthen maritime education and capacity development in Africa. He emphasized the University’s readiness to support MOESNA’s initiatives related to capacity building such as the proposed Regional Maritime University that would contribute to developing the next generation of maritime leaders and professionals for the region.

Both institutions acknowledged the importance of strengthening partnerships between regional maritime organizations and centers of excellence in higher maritime education as a means of supporting sustainable shipping, safe navigation, environmental protection and the achievement of international maritime development goals.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen cooperation through the implementation of mutually beneficial initiatives that will contribute to building a safer, secure, environmentally sustainable and economically competitive maritime sector across the Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa region.
