Angola: American investors visit the port of Lobito
On 26 June 2025, David Reekmans, Managing Director of AGL Lobito Terminal (ALT), welcomed a 70-member delegation of high-ranking American diplomats, American investors and Angolan government authorities to ALT’s multipurpose terminal, as part of the closing ceremony of the United States-Africa summit held in Luanda from 22 to 25 June.
Led by Jorge Bengue, Secretary of State for Land Transportation, the delegation included Florizelle Liser, Senior Chief of the Bureau of African Affairs at the US Department of State; Troy Frotell, President and CEO of the American Business Council on Africa; Noah Zaring, Business Development Manager at the US Embassy in Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe; Manuel Nunes Junior, Governor of Benguela; António Cabral, Managing Director of the Benguela Railway; and officials from various government departments.
“The delegation was able to appreciate the role played by the port of Lobito in facilitating economic exchanges in the sub-region. The fact that AGL is now operating the port is added value for the country. Since the start of the concession, the volumes handled have increased. We handled 30% more volume in our first year of operation,” explains David Reekmans, Managing Director of ALT.
‘The presence of the American delegation in Lobito is an asset for boosting business partnerships and investment in the country,’ said Manuel Nunes Junior, provincial governor of Benguela.
The Secretary of State for Land Transport, Jorge Bengue, stressed the strategic role of the Lobito Corridor railway line, which stretches some 1,300 km to the border with the DRC, with the AGL terminal in the port of Lobito, as a gateway to the Atlantic and many other points around the world.
The Port of Lobito is an Angolan port located in the city of Lobito, in the province of Benguela. The terminal’s operations are carried out by AGL Lobito Terminal’s 730 employees, as well as the handling equipment, information systems, container parks and conventional terminals of the multipurpose terminal. It is positioned to play a strategic role in the global energy transition, being the first Atlantic gateway to the Copperbelt region.
