Kenya Advances Regional Maritime Integration at MOESNA Coordination Committee Meeting

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Mr Aden Abdi Millah represented the Government of the Republic of Kenya at the Coordination Committee Meeting of Member States of the Maritime Organization for Eastern and Southern Africa (MOESNA), held in Mombasa from 6th to 7th August 2026.

The meeting brought together regional maritime stakeholders to deliberate on strategic priorities and initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation, connectivity and competitiveness within the Eastern and Southern African maritime sector.

Key among the discussions was the proposed establishment of a Regional Maritime University and a Regional Shipping Line(s) Network. The initiatives seek to enhance maritime education, training and skills development, strengthen regional shipping capacity, promote indigenous ship ownership and facilitate greater intra-regional trade and connectivity.

The proposed interventions are also expected to contribute to the development of a skilled regional maritime workforce, create employment and investment opportunities, increase the participation of regional operators in maritime transport, and strengthen the capacity of Member States to harness the economic potential of the maritime sector.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of coordinated regional action in developing a resilient, competitive and sustainable maritime industry capable of supporting trade, investment and economic transformation across the region.

The meeting was attended by Principal/Permanent Secretaries and representatives from the United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Uganda, Republic of Zambia, Republic of Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Malawi and Republic of Burundi.
