GAMBIA NAVY INTERCEPTS SUSPECTED IRREGULAR MIGRANTS AT KUNTA KINTEH ISLAND IN JUFFUREH
The Gambia Navy on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, foiled an attempted irregular migration operation within The Gambia’s territorial waters near Kunta Kinteh Island in Juffureh. Naval personnel, working in close collaboration with their Guardia Civil counterparts, intercepted a suspected vessel carrying 207 individuals believed to be attempting the perilous sea journey to Europe. The operation forms part of the Navy’s sustained efforts to combat illegal migration and enhance maritime security.
The intercepted group comprised 137 males and 70 females, including 11 minors. Following the interception, all the suspected migrants were safely secured and taken into custody for onward processes and subsequent handover to the appropriate agency in accordance with established procedures.
The successful operation underscores the Gambia Armed Forces’ unwavering vigilance and commitment to safeguarding the country’s territorial waters. It also reflects the Armed Forces’ continued support to national and regional initiatives aimed at combating irregular migration, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and other transnational organised crimes.
The Gambia Armed Forces reiterate that irregular migration by sea remains an extremely dangerous and unpredictable undertaking. Many migrants risk their lives aboard overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels, often falling victim to human traffickers and migrant smugglers who exploit their vulnerabilities. The public, particularly young people, is therefore strongly urged to refrain from embarking on such perilous journeys and instead pursue safe, legal, and legitimate avenues for travel and economic opportunities.
